Now

Near you

The Now screen with the live data from this moment, the same as Near you on the home page.

A day with the app

An ordinary day. No surprises.

The M25 at eight in the morning. The amber warning that catches everyone out. The overnight closure you only find out about at the slip road. You know the story. With the app, you are the one who knows first, without searching.

Illustrative examples. The alerts you get depend on the places, routes and alerts you choose.

  1. 7:40
    Live Roads

    M25 queueing anticlockwise at J10

A collision between J10 and J9 and the queue is already long. Your commute goes that way: there is still time to leave earlier or go round.

  2. 15:10
    Live Roads

Amber warning for wind from 18:00

The Met Office has issued it for Yorkshire & Humber. If you drive home over the M62 tonight, you know before you set off, not halfway across the Pennines.

  3. 18:30
    Live Roads

Flood warning near your parents' place

The Environment Agency has issued one for the river by their village. You see where it is on the map before you drive over at the weekend, without hunting through the news.

  4. 21:30
    Live Roads

    M6 closed tonight, J10 to J11

A full overnight closure from 21:00 to 06:00, with a signed diversion. You find out tonight on the sofa, not at the slip road.

What you will get

Everything that affects your trip, in one place

Today it is one website for the motorways, another for Scotland's roads, the Met Office for warnings and the news for the rest. In the app it is all together, filtered for where you live and where you drive. One glance and you are done.

Now

Open the app and see straight away what is happening around you: closures and roadworks from National Highways, Traffic Wales, Traffic Scotland and TrafficwatchNI, incidents, Met Office warnings and Environment Agency flood warnings. All sorted by distance, with the source of each one.

Routes

Save the trips you always make, like your commute or the school run. Before the time you usually leave, the app checks for anything on the way and only tells you if there is.

Alerts

Pick your places (home, work, your parents' town) and what you want to hear about. Met Office amber and red warnings, full closures on your roads and overnight closures the night before reach you without you having to look.

Map and more

The map with everything that is live, the cheapest fuel around you (Fuel Finder prices, the government's scheme) and the roads you check every day. What you already use on the site, now in your pocket.

Turn-by-turn navigation comes in a later phase. For now the app tells you what is going on; to be guided to your destination, keep using the maps app you prefer.

Why it is different

Built to warn you, not to distract you

  • Official sources only

Everything you see comes from 7 official sources, the same ones Live Roads uses and credits every day. No rumours or stray reports: every alert says where it comes from.

    • National Highways
    • Traffic Wales
    • Traffic Scotland
    • TrafficwatchNI (DfI)
    • TfL Open Data
    • Met Office
    • MeteoAlarm
  • Severe alerts come first

When a storm is named, the Met Office warnings are already out, but they reach you through channels you are not reading while you drive. A full closure can turn a short trip into a long diversion. That is why an amber or red warning for one of your places, or a full closure on your route, always reaches you, even during quiet hours.

  • We keep only what you choose

You create a free account and we keep the places, routes and alerts you choose there, so we can warn you in time. We do not track where you go or keep a history of your trips. If you delete the account, everything goes with it.

When is the app coming out?

We do not have a date yet and would rather not promise one. We are building it on top of what Live Roads already does every day. Everyone on the list hears first and can try it before anyone else.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. The app is free: download it, create your account and use it, without paying.

Do I need an account?

Yes, but it is free and takes a minute. The account keeps your places, your routes and your alert preferences, so the app knows what to warn you about. If you change phones, it is all there waiting for you.

What data do you keep about me?

We keep only what you choose: your account email, places, routes and alerts. We do not track where you go or keep a history of your trips. If you delete your account, everything in it goes too.

Is it coming to the UK?

Yes. The app is coming to the UK, built on the official sources Live Roads already reads for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. There is no date yet; people on the list will be among the first to try it.

Which phones will it work on?

iPhone and Android. You can tell us which one you use in the form, which helps us plan the testing.

How many notifications will I get?

Only the ones you choose. You set the places, routes and kinds of alert you care about, and you can set quiet hours, at night for example. The exception is severe alerts, like a Met Office red warning or a full closure on your route: those always get through.

Where does the data come from?

From official sources: National Highways, Traffic Wales, Traffic Scotland, TrafficwatchNI (DfI), TfL Open Data, Met Office and MeteoAlarm. They are the same ones Live Roads uses on the site, and every alert shows where it came from.

What do you do with my email?

We only use it to tell you about the app: first an email to confirm your sign-up, then the news that matters, like the day you can try it. We never sell it, and every email has a link to leave the list in one click. Privacy policy.

The queue will not warn you. We will.

Fewer mornings stuck in a queue you could have avoided. Fewer surprises from the weather or a closure you did not know about. Leave your email and be among the first to try the app.
