Questions

How do I know if a motorway is closed tonight?
Choose “Tonight” above and enter your journey. We check the closures National Highways and Traffic Wales have planned for 22:00 and show any on your route, with a way around them. Most motorway closures in England run overnight, often from 20:00 or 21:00 to 06:00, and are published in advance. Every full closure is also listed on the closures page.
Where does the closure data come from?
National Highways for the motorways and major A roads in England, and Traffic Wales for Wales, both refreshed every few minutes. Roads run by local councils are not covered, and nor are Scotland and Northern Ireland yet. Routes are worked out on OpenStreetMap.
Does it account for traffic jams?
No. Journey times assume free-flowing traffic. The check is about closures: where the road is shut, not how busy it is.
Which closures does it go around?
Full closures in your direction of travel, and slip roads your route actually uses. Lane closures, lay-by closures and restrictions for heavy vehicles only are shown as warnings, since you can still get through.

See every full closure on the closures page, or what's happening now on the live map.
