About

About Live Roads

What is happening on the road, by road and by junction, from the official sources and nothing else.

What Live Roads is

Live Roads brings together what the road authorities of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland publish about their roads, and shows it in one place, road by road: incidents, roadworks, closures tonight and this weekend, weather warnings and the price of fuel at every filling station.

Each authority publishes its own feed, in its own format, on its own website. A drive from Kent to Glasgow crosses several of them. Live Roads reads them all, every minute, and puts each event on the road and junction it belongs to, with the time it was last updated and a link to the source.

Where the data comes from

Only from official sources: National Highways, Traffic Wales, Traffic Scotland and TrafficwatchNI for the roads, Transport for London for London's streets, the Met Office for weather warnings and the government's Fuel Finder for fuel prices. Nothing on the site comes from drivers' reports, phones or guesses.

How each source is read, what counts as a closure, how the site handles a source that stops publishing and how the cheapest fuel is chosen are all set out in how Live Roads works.

What Live Roads is not

  • It is not an official service. Live Roads is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by National Highways, Traffic Wales, Traffic Scotland, TrafficwatchNI, Transport for London, the Met Office or the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
  • It is not a sat nav and does not predict delays. It shows what the authorities have published, as they published it.
  • It is only as complete as its sources. Roads run by local councils in Great Britain are not covered, and England's accidents and breakdowns come from what the motorway signs say until the full National Highways incident feed is connected.
  • No one pays to appear on Live Roads or to be ranked higher, including filling stations.

Who runs it

Live Roads is part of the Roadscore group of live traffic sites, and is run by Maurício Amaro. The same approach, official sources read every minute and shown road by road, runs the group's sites in other countries.

Corrections and contact

If something on the site is wrong, out of date or on the wrong road, write to [email protected] with the page and what you saw. Errors in how we read a source are fixed as soon as we can, usually the same day. An error in the source itself is reported to the authority that published it. For a fuel price that is wrong, report it directly to Fuel Finder: the link is under every price table.
