Why it closes
High winds are the usual reason: high-sided vehicles are restricted first, and in the worst storms the bridge closes to all traffic. In Storm Éowyn in January 2025 it closed as a precaution from 9am to 3pm, after restrictions on high-sided vehicles from 3am.
Maintenance is mostly done overnight or at weekends: in 2026 there were overnight improvement works from January to March, and a weekend closure of the southbound carriageway for resurfacing in August.
The diversion
When the bridge is closed, traffic between the two sides of the Clyde goes through Glasgow, by the Clyde Tunnel: about 17 miles, as signed for the 2025 resurfacing closure.
The bridge has been free to cross since its tolls were removed in 2006.
