Two road bridges

The Queensferry Crossing, opened in 2017, carries the M90 and all general traffic. The older Forth Road Bridge beside it is a public transport corridor for buses, taxis and similar vehicles. When the Queensferry Crossing has to close, general M90 traffic is diverted over the Forth Road Bridge, by the Ferrytoll junction (M90 J1B) on the north side and the Echline junction on the south side.

Wind

The Queensferry Crossing has wind shielding. It stays open to high-sided vehicles in gusts of up to about 70mph, and has stayed open more than a hundred times when the Forth Road Bridge would probably have closed to some or all traffic. The Forth Road Bridge closes to high-sided and wind-susceptible vehicles in gusts above about 50mph.

In Storm Éowyn in January 2025, the Forth Road Bridge closed to all vehicles, while the Queensferry Crossing stayed open to cars and closed to high-sided vehicles, motorcycles, and cars towing trailers or carrying roof boxes.
